Automatic Series | 2021

This automatic series was made, in part, in response to my lack of patience with clay. To me clay is a truly beautiful material, but a material that demands time, patience and respect. Over the last year, life has been far more hectic, and making ceramics, that was once a practice for peace of mind became a frustration. Clay cannot be rushed and cannot be forced, else you will have a piece that collapses, a piece that cracks or a piece that explodes. This small series of usable objects were made “automatically”, made without thinking, and incorporates the practice of “automatic drawing”. Automatic drawing, as well as automatic writing (surrealist automatism) are methods of making in which the artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the unconscious mind to have great sway. Often this reveals a lot about the artists inner psyche.
